 eNoticeBoard | Women's Network Australia

Week Starting | Monday: 8 February 2010

. .

Dear [subscriber-firstname],

The number one reason over and above anything else that women join WNA is for access to new and potential clients. However, having access to people is a long way from igniting trade and doing business. Networking and doing it well is not necessarily a natural talent, for most - it's learned behaviour.

Getting started in any professional network that you decide to join takes confidence and, more importantly, a belief that what you have to offer overall as a human being is of value to those within the group. In my 20 years of running WNA I have never come across a woman who didn't have an abundance to offer, but the real point here is that she needs to recognise within herself the value she has to contribute. So how, when you are trying to get your business or career off the ground, can you focus on yourself as a total package when your most pressing need is to generate income? The simple facts are that learning to network effectively will produce the results you desire every time. Nothing can move your career or business prospects further and faster than having a base of colleagues positioned to support you in your goals. And few things feel better than using your talents to help others achieve their goals.

Getting a grip on networking starts with redefining in your mind what networking actually means. It is not a quick fix for some drama situation in which you currently find yourself. I am always driving home the concept that networking is NOT about selling, about you or about being in other people's faces. It is not surprising then that participants in my Networking and Self Promotion Workshops feel a weight has been instantly lifted off their shoulders when they discover that, if you learn to network ethically and effectively, the whole tacky issue of pushing yourself on others and being seen as a nuisance is out the door. Book now for my Networking Workshop in Melbourne this Friday or the Brisbane Workshop the following Friday.

If you're inspired and want to kick-start your networking activities, tomorrow morning send a handwritten thank you note to someone who has made a difference to your business, life or direction during the last week. Recognising what others are doing for you is a fabulous start to understanding the dynamics of networking.

Regards
