| International Day of Rural Women - 15 October |
The first International Day of Rural Women was observed on October 15, 2008. This day recognises the role of rural women, including indigenous women, in enhancing agricultural and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty. The idea of honoring rural women with a special day was put forward at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, in 1995. It was suggested that October 15 be celebrated as 'World Rural Women's Day', which is the eve of World Food Day, to highlight rural women's role in food production and food security. 'World Rural Women's Day' was previously celebrated across the world for more than a decade before it was officially a UN observance.

| New QRWN column in NRIA magazine |
The QRWN Board is very excited to announce we have been invited to share regional, rural and remote women's stories and issues on a national scale: we have been invited to provide a magazine column in the New Rural Industries Australia's beautiful bi-monthly magazine 'Passion To Profit'. New Rural Industries Australia is a national industry alliance representing new and emerging Australian rural industries. Its focus is on maximizing the economic benefits that Australia gains from such industries and encouraging new rural industries.
We think this is a perfect forum for publicising the achievements of Queensland and national women involved in the forefront of new rural industries (since our own broad goals are very similar) and we're delighted to be part of this terrific new initiative.
You can view the latest edition of 'Passion To Profit' online by clicking here. Subscribe to the e-magazine here.
The QRWN contribution to 'Passion for Profit' is being coordinated by QRWN board member Bev Ryan - please contact her at admin@qrwn.org.au should you have a possible contribution, profile or story idea.

| Burnett Writing Challenge |
Jessie Hodgson, QRWN supporter, writes: "Ever heard of the NaNoEriMo? It's a '50,000 words in 30 days' writing challenge - great fun at the very least! After completing the challenge last year I am taking up the banner this year to encourage people in the Burnett region to become the writers that they have always wished they were. I have just received the nod of approval from the American headquarters to be an official NaNoWriMo Municipal Liaison and we have a brand spanking new region on the global website - Burnett Region.
**
Here's how you can support us: go to the facebook page 'BURNETT NANO' and 'like' us - we all need a cheer squad! If you have any prizes, words of encouragement or places that you know of who will host a 'write-in' in the month of November, please let me know. Write-ins will need to be in the Burnett area. Go 'write ahead' and join us - and spread the word to all your friendly writing contacts!"
**
To locate the Burnett Region, go to the NaNoWriMo website then click on 'NaNo near you'. There is also a NaNoWrimo Young Writers program for under 13s. **
