  • Helping the connection between farmers and the neighbourhood

    By Genevieve Robey
You may have already heard of Food Connect. Through their system, seasonal food is provided by about 80 farmers around Brisbane and "City Cousins" act as delivery points for Food Connect and pick up points for city folk.

There are Food Connect "City Cousins" here in Carina, Cannon Hill and Holland Park. Food Connect is a brilliant example of communities working together for sustainable, positive and healthy outcomes. Carindale this month got its own "City Cousin" and I had a chat with her and explored Food Connect a bit further. Full story.

Park & Ride for Carindale bus station
The petition to the Queensland Parliament for the "Request for Park and Ride facilities for Carindale" closed on 30th April. It obtained 274 signatures. A response is due on 9th June 2011. While a location has been suggested, the petition itself was just in regards to the request for a park and ride, not at a specific location. More infrmation on the QLD Parliament petition page.

    Cr Adrian Schrinner says:
"There is plenty of room available for a Park n Ride on the corner of Creek Road and Old Cleveland Road next to the Council building and the Bedivere Street bridge. The area is sealed and could be formalised at relatively low cost."

You can ask your questions and join the discussion here. Other locals have also been sharing their views on the topic.

If there's a different transport, infrastructure or community issue you want to raise, why not use our Letter to the Editor page. We follow "play nice" community rules to encourage friendly involvement. If you don't want to publish your comments, you can raise an issue with us via email (info@carindaleconnect.com.au) and it may be a subject we can cover further on Carindale Connect.

Community Plantings at Salvin Creek, Pine Mountain Road

Salvin Creek is an important corridor for wildlife, connecting Whites Hill Reserve to Bulimba Creek. The project site is on Council land which was purchased under the Bushland Preservation Levy. Council's 2 Million Trees are considering planting about 600 trees in the area. Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordinating Committee (B4C) is a not-for-profit environment and Landcare group, working to protect and enhance natural areas in Brisbane. We've had the pleasure of volunteering with them (read an earlier post here). B4C has a grant from the Qld Govt Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) to perform weed control and then planting of native species to assist with revegetating the creek corridor for fauna movement and habitat. Nest boxes will be placed in trees in the corridor. Over the two planting days, 340 natives will be established as well as some weed clearing. An ecological walk will show the rehabilitation that has occurred and the potential of the corridor. Morning tea will be included.

When: Saturday 21 May & Saturday 11 June
    Time: 9am - 11am
Location: Salvin Creek at Pine Mountain Road (UBD 181, K12)
Parking: Living Faith Uniting Church, Pine Mountain Rd, Carina Heights
Wear: Closed in shoes, shirt with sleeves, wide brimmed hat. Bring waterbottle
    More: B4C 3420 4800, 0410 840 343, b4c@bulimbacreek.org.au

    Cookbooks for cooks

Do you have some quality cookbooks that you no longer use? Here is a lovely initative by Baked Relief, the same group who have been so generous to many flood and cyclone victims:

"Lets just say you love cooking and creating in the kitchen and you lost all of your cookbooks during a flood or cyclone. As I have around 100 cookbooks collected over many years and some from my grandmother, I would be very upset if they were gone forever.
I know we can not replace the sentimental aspects of this loss, but what we can do is bring back a small ray of cooking hope!"

One of the cookbook drop off points is nice and local - at Holland Park.

More information and donate a spare cookbook for a lover of cooking who lost so much.
